The end of summer is near… children across the G.T.A. are preparing to return back to school and many parents are looking to return back to the workforce after extended summer leaves. Are you rejecting potential candidates just because of an employment gap on their resume? Here are some things to consider when reviewing the resume of a candidate who is returning to work after some time off.

Life happens and if an employee has to leave work due to a family member’s illness, their own illness, or to care for a new baby, this is not an indication of the candidate’s skill set or performance at work. Instead of rejecting a potential candidate due to an employment gap, why not ask them instead their reasoning for taking time off? In many cases life experience can be just as valuable as work experience. Whether candidates are taking time off to care for family over the summer, or to travel the world, life experiences teach you people skills, adaptability and more. Not to mention, these experiences can be inspiring; time off can be a great way for an individual to feel rejuvenated and re-energized to return to the workforce with new enthusiasm and a creativity boost.

Depending on how much time off a candidate has taken there is a good chance that their skill level for the industry you are hiring for may not be impacted by some time off. If it is, then why not consider offering a brief training period? If the candidate is willing to learn and to grow their skills then consider closely if the candidate is a good culture fit, has the soft skills needed to complete the job well, and if you can see them as a long-term addition to the team. In a candidate driven market with a skills shortage, it can be a good idea to invest in a potential candidate.
